“Allergies – Disease in Disguise”

I’ve been trying to be too intricate with my posts that it started to stress me out. I wanted to put up really cool photos and share super awesome content with y’all, which is still my intention. But I was over thinking each post and trying to get all fancy and extra with my material. I end up posting less because of this silly pressure I’ve put on myself. I’m still trying to find my groove, but today’s post is a good start.

I was sitting in my Holistic Nutrition class today, attending my first lecture on Allergies. The instructor is a Registered Holistic Nutritionist herself and has decades of experience working with clients. Allergies is a topic she continues to research immensely – hence why she’s teaching this course I suppose!

I learned so much in the first 10 minutes and wanted to share it right away- in my own words, exactly what I got out of the beginning of class today. I posted this on my Instagram and Facebook Feed as well. The textbook we are using is also below. I started reading it and can’t put it down – except to write this post! The author is a Nutritionist and a Chiro – so she is obviously a bit more biased towards chiro treatments. Again, when it comes to health and fitness, remember that it is YOUR health and body, so absorb all the information you can, and try it out. Pick what you think would work for you – but I strongly believe in healing with whole foods and finding the underlying cause.

LOW IRON? ANEMIC?

The root cause of an allergy often goes unrecognized. It can manifest itself in many ways such as arthritis, gallbladder disease, headache, depression, psychotic behaviour, digestive issues and malabsorption, and hundreds of other symptoms. Drugs may relieve or manage symptoms but will never make the person well.

People who show iron deficiency or are determined as being anemic (decrease in red blood cell mass), are often told to eat more red meat and take iron supplements.

Aside from eating a low iron diet, iron deficiency can be caused my low hydrochloric acid (HCl) produced in the stomach. HCl is needed for absorption of iron, as well as magnesium, calcium, B12, among other nutrients, as well as protein digestion. With an under active stomach (due to low HCl), eating more red meat and supplementing iron will not help your body absorb iron. In fact, when iron is not absorbed, it gets deposited into joints, leading to joint pain, and the anemia still persists. WOW what a snowball effect! So before you reach for the pills or drown yourself in red meat (which takes longer for the body to digest, and can put additional stress on the under active stomach), consider trying these:

  1. drink water mixed with organic apple cider vinegar 20 mins before meals
  2.  boil your own raw ginger tea to drink 20 mins before or 20 mins after meals
  3. consume vitamin c with your iron-rich meals to help with absorption
  4. increase your intake of whole vegetables and fruits as they contain plant sources of iron (non heme iron) as well as bioflavonoids to help with vitamin c absorption

By healing the underlying cause, not only can the iron deficiency be addressed, but overall mood, immune system and energy levels can also be improved. And guess what? this will lead to fat loss and healthy weight management! It’s possible to recover and enjoy an allergy-free life. Can’t wait to learn more and share with y’all!
